This is a rose I started drawing from life last year. I’ve got the drawing back out and am working on it more, using photos I took as reference. I want to add leaves, too. I’d appreciate suggestions to improve this. Thank you.

Hi Carol, Beautiful. Just keep doing what you are doing. You might think of adding some water color at some point.

Thank you Doug for your kind comment! I could see some of the toning issues but didn’t realize those highlights were not in the right place. I really appreciate getting your experienced advice.

Ooh good one Cynthia! So much fun. Yes to what Katy said – where is the highlight on that sphere? You did consider the highlight on the cylinder/tail part of the root. I like this very much.

So great Jill. I love those leaves and the character-ness of all of these. wonder if the bells could have a bit more colour saturation in some places. Might just be the photograph, though.

Such a tough view/angle to draw – which I why I never do it – ha! Do a side view next time – and think of showing me more light green near the highlight so you have a gradation form the highlight out to a lighter green and then darker as it curves away. You could even try putting down the lightest yellowish green over the whole form (except for…[Read more]

@doug Thanks, Doug. I used scissors. I have done a lot of fabric collage and got used to cutting things up :). The idea came back to me with the crabapple drawing that had a very unfortunate mess on one edge. That’s when the scissors came out! These aren’t glued down yet because I want to draw in the faint shadow they cast. I use an archival glu…[Read more]
