Hi Julie- I am not seeing shadows on the actual branch which would be a good reference for your drawing. Judging from the cast shadows on the actual branch there are conflicting light sources. Ideally you want to set up a light that is coming down at a 45 degree angle as if over your left shoulder and have minimal or no other light sources. Your…[Read more]

Hi Julie- this is much better! Nice range of smooth toning! I think you could go darker on the right side edge (and be sure to adjust the tones to the left of it if need be). The left edge looks like an outline. The left edge gets to be a 3 or 4 because it is close to the light source. I would add a little more of the tone you have on that left…[Read more]

Thanks guys. The stems (which I just learned are actually storage organs called pseudobulbs) are what made me want to draw this orchid. They are so interesting. My plan is to fine-tune the drawing a bit, and then try to paint it on vellum. But knowing me, I’ll get distracted and never get around to it 🙂

This looks great, Jill. The extra green has given your plant a lively personality.

I took this photo on the kitchen counter, not where I draw so the light is little funky. Wendy is right, drawing branches is addictive.
-
I agree! I keep collecting more to draw, even though they are “just branches.” Nicely done study.

I’m undecided about text or anything else. Just letting them be for now.

Those pits are great! I didn’t find any morels this year :(. I think the dying elm tree at my usual spot is fully dead now.
-
Thanks, Pam. Unfortunately, those are the only morels we’ve found so far and then we ate them with a few wild oyster mushrooms. We’ll keep looking:)
