Workshop Dates: August 16-20, 2022, 10am-4pm

Workshop Description:

Study the fundamentals of botanical drawing using graphite pencil, colored pencils, watercolor pencils and watercolor. Drawing plants and flowers starts with observation. Under the supervision of Draw Botanical Instructor, Sam McWilliams, supported by Harriet O’Donnell, Botanical artist and Draw Botanical art feed/community member from Australia, students will create detailed botanical drawings and sketchbook pages of flowering plants, fruits and seed pods, working directly from the wide variety of tropical plants growing at NTBG.

NTBG botanists and staff will be available to help with garden excursions, understanding botany and other aspects of plants. We will all get to visit NTBG’s incredible Rare Book Room, housing botanical drawings and prints from the 17th century to present, an experience not to be missed.

Our Drawing Workshops are designed to fit the needs of students of ALL LEVELS. Workshops are a great way for beginners to receive lots of one-on-one instruction and feedback in a supportive environment. We will provide structured group lessons for our beginners. For the more experienced artist, workshops are a way to make time to focus, continue to advance your skills, and create more-detailed work in the company of other skilled artists. And everyone has incredible access to the stunning gardens.

Prerequisites are not required for this workshop, but if you want to gain confidence and build some foundational skills before attending, we recommend completing the Botanical Basics online program.

Instructional classes will be conducted for 5 days from 10:00am to 4:00pm on the premises at The National Tropical Botanical Garden. We have a large  indoor/outdoor classroom for our use, with a stunning view of the valley to the ocean, with time to go down into the garden for drawing and collecting subjects. During the workshop we will go into the garden to draw at the Food for Thought garden where there are tables and chairs to set up comfortably. This year we are adding a Nature Journaling component to one of our morning garden visits. Students can arrive early and stay late if they want to each day. Please bring your own lunch and snacks to class. We will not provide meals at this workshop. There is a full kitchen with fridge, microwave, coffee maker, blender, toaster oven, utensils, glasses, plates etc.

Instructors are available in the classroom and do daily demonstrations. You are invited to arrive at 9am the first day to set up if you like. Consider arriving early or staying longer on Kauai to explore the beautiful island more.

Fee does not include travel, lodging, or meals.
