Botanical Subject(s): A tree in winter (use photographs or a tree that you have easy access to). You may also want to choose a tree that you have drawn other parts of, for example, if you have leaves and acorns from a particular oak, perhaps you’d like to add an image of the full tree to your drawing.

Workshop Description: Graphite habit drawings (views of an entire plant in its natural habitat and growth pattern) can make excellent, rich, additions to your botanical compositions. In this workshop, we pay homage to the bare, winter tree. Learn to observe the growth of trees and draw them in graphite.

To inspire you, here is a favorite quote about winter trees:

“In winter, we are prone to regard our trees as cold, bare, and dreary; and we bid them wait until they are again clothed in verdure before we may accord to them comradeship. However, it is during this winter resting time that the tree stands revealed to the uttermost, ready to give its most intimate confidences to those who love it. It is indeed a superficial acquaintance that depends upon the garb worn for half the year; and to those who know them, the trees display even more individuality in the winter than in the summer.” – Anna Botsford Comstock (September 1, 1854–August 24, 1930)

Our workshops include a set of pre-recorded videos for you to watch as you prepare for class, as well as recordings of each workshop session, delivered via email. We encourage collaboration and community, and we strive to create a safe virtual environment for everyone to draw together. We provide live demonstrations on the first day of a workshop and constructive critique of your work on the second day. If you are unable to attend at the time of the live workshop, you will receive recordings to watch at your convenience. ALL of the registration and video material for this workshop is delivered to you via email. Please be sure to add info@drawbotanical.com to your email contacts so that you do not miss correspondence from us!

Cancellation Policy: Cancellations at least one week in advance will receive a 95% refund (5% processing fee), or you can choose to transfer your registration to another available workshop. If you cancel less than one week up to 48 hours before the event, we will give you a 95% refund, less 5% if we can find someone to replace your spot. Less than 48 hours cancellation, we cannot issue a refund. You will still receive all recordings from the workshop, and you can watch them at your convenience.
