@wendy, @vern Here is the drawing of the Scarlet Oak leaf that I started to work on during this past week’s workshop at the NYBG. I will continue to refine the veins, and start to add the layers of colored pencil on top of the watercolor washes I put down to brighten up and bring out the colors

Looking so good, Carmen!! The watercolor has a lovely quality here. Can’t wait to see this with more layers! Even though your actual leaf is very dark, preserving a little bit of the lightness you’ve created here will help you maintain balance as you go along. Consider shading and toning with one light source as you begin to add pencil so that (a) the veins seem a little 3d (tone like teeny cylinders) and (b) so the leaf itself has some texture/planes. Really gorgeous. 🙂
