Hi, I tried to replicate the shading and toning from your example. Again, I erased and improved (hopefully) my current drawing. Let me know if its better to start fresh…

Hi Doug, The milkweed is pinker on this photo and also on the original drawing. This is Asclepias speciosa or Showy Milkweed and this specimen was taken in S-W Alberta in a protected native grass area. I wanted to draw the plant but could not pick it and set it up with the right lighting. I also used different photos to fit the drawing on the…[Read more]

It is looking better Margaret! Look at Sara’s yellow plum and it’s reflected light. When doing a reflected light, it often helps to use an ivory pencil (or yellow ocher, depending on the color of the subject) on top to blend colors in the reflected light area. You can blend the ivory up into the dark toning above it and create the soft, irr…[Read more]

It does make sense. I did use a lot of Ivory. I will keep trying and study other examples. Thank you for your feedback.

Margaret, I made a little drawing of how I go about my cast shadows. @doug-milne, will you check it over to make sure I’m not suggesting any bad habits?
-
Hi Sara- this looks good! Except for step 1, it is basically how it is illustrated in Wendy’s videos and books. I am curious about step 1, but if it helps you visualize your process, by all means do it! I start with what is your step 2, which is applying a grisailles layer in color pencil (using an appropriate color which is usually a darker t…

Hello Sara and Doug,
Thank you for all these suggestions. I have been traveling and will get back to trying again very soon!

This is very helpful with understanding the shadows. I will try again.

Hi Sara, I agree. These are so realistic. I like the detailed stem and line on the plum. Very beautiful! I am trying to replicate your cast shadows…

Hi Doug. 🙂 I’ve gone back and added a bit more shadow where you suggested. I’m wondering if I should have pushed it even more but I chickened out.

A quick sketch I did to use for reference. Note how the shadows cast by the overlapping cylinders are curved. They are curved because it is a cylinder crossing over another cylinder. Not two flat subjects crossing over each other. Also note how the shadow casts are only on one side of a cylinder when they cross. The cylinder that is being crossed…[Read more]

Thank you Doug, I also find this helpful and will try again with a lighted model made with pencils or chopsticks as you suggested.

Yes. Sara’s plum drawings show the reflected light so well. I will try again.

Nice job on the cherries Denise. You have a good range of tones on the pair of cherries that also show a leaf. The other two pairs need more range of tones to emphasize their form.

Hi Denise- the roots look good! Remember that there will be roots in the forefront, the middle and the back and they will be toned accordingly. Even though they can be very narrow, remember that roots are elongated cylinders so they should have an indication of a range of tones on each individual root to
convey their form. With the plaid…[Read more] -

You are getting there Margaret! The horizontal cylinders are still missing the range of tones that are going to give them their form. The vertical cylinder on the left is close to what all of the cylinders should look like. Be sure not to lose the highlight.

Much better form on this version Margaret! Nice range of tones that give the sphere wonderful form. A couple of things to consider- the highlight could still be lighter. The reflected light currently looks whiter than the main highlight. The reflected light should not be as white/light as the main highlight. Also keep working on having the…[Read more]

Hi Helene! I have not seen a purple Asclepius before. The colors are very pleasing and the image is beautifully drawn. There are a couple of areas I would revisit. The stems in the background of the flower cluster on the right need more attention. Even if they are white (or a light color) they would be in shadow and need to be both shadow and form…[Read more]
