    • Maianthemum stellatum, maianthemum racemosum and allium tricoccum. This is a piece I’m working on for a show — the deadline is in like 36 hours 😬 but I’m also committed to contributing botanical studies of two of the species shown here to a florilegium being organized by my local botanical artists group (it’s focused on native plants found at the nature center where we meet). It’s still a learning curve for me to imagine the life source. So I was happy to find some ethically harvested ramps for sale at the farmers market that I could use with my lamp at home.

    • *light source, not life source

    • This was a humbling experience. I thought I saw six lobes in the corolla tube, but when I looked up this species in my flora, it said this species has five. I guess this is the case with flowers in the borage family. I will hopefully add a leaf to this page when I have time. While I was working on this at the Chicago Botanic Garden, there were a pair of nuthatches having a quiet conversation with one another on a nearby tree. I love that botanical art fosters the opportunity for such moments.

    • Here’s how I resolved the white spaces on this page. Thank you to those who gave feedback on the earlier iterations of this plant exploration page!

    • Wonderful! That looks great now, your black and white ‘whole flower’ images is lovely! And I love your handwriting. 🙂

    • Oh my goodness Maureen, this is soooo beautiful. I have just spent ages zooming in on your descriptions and looking at the detail in your drawings. I particularly like the five stamen in a row on the open corolla. The bit where they break away and you’ve done the shadow is so cool. Also, even though you thought you saw six lobes in the corolla, you have only drawn five of everything else… so it’s funny that your brain must have subconsciously known… or did you draw those bits later? The colours and the shapes and the great little ‘indent’ shadows are so good… thanks for sharing. Now I feel like I haven’t been doing enough drawing. Might need to get back into it this week. 🙂

    • Love love love. You have so much talent Maureen! Hope you get it all finished in time. 26 hours to go 🙂

    • Great page Maureen! Beautifully done and very informative!!!!

    • Another great page Maureen! So many wonderful views that are deftly handled!!! Looking forward to seeing more of your work!

    • Beautifully rendered Maureen! I really like the composition! It looks like how you see a group of plants in nature. Congratulations on the show!!!

    • Thank you @petapumpkineater and @doug-milne for your kind words and encouragement! Peta, I “corrected” my drawings to try to make it seem like they only had five lobes. I’m not sure that I pulled it off. Oh well, it was a good learning experience! And Peta, I was feeling like I hadn’t been doing enough drawing while looking at *your* wonderful work in the feed!

    • Thank you, Peta and Doug! 😊

    • Fun page! I like those cross sections. Your addition of the monotone drawing in the corner was perfect. Doesn’t draw focus from the main image, but gives us more information and completes the page!

    • Another lovely, informative page! I love seeing the artist’s mind at work! My one comment would be to vary your text in size and weight. As it is it is all one note. Also, I can’t wait to see what are you going to do with that empty square on the bottom right!

    • Thank you, @katylyness!

    • Thank you @katylyness — I haven’t made much of an effort to make the text on my pages aesthetically interesting so that feedback is helpful.
