Thought I’d share this. Yesterday, after an attempt to erase away some of the shadow and clean up the color, everything seemed kind of…blah. I realized after the webinar that the comments about the red onion – our ability to choose putting the darker part of a fruit or vegetable in the shadow vs. the highlight side -applied to my drawing here. By putting the dark red in the light, and the orange in the shadow, I was making things harder, and I think, flattening the shape. So, I did a bunch of swatches using Red Violet for the grisalle, rather than Earth Green, which I used for the orange in the center of the page. I’m going to do a new drawing, putting the red in the *shadow* and using a Red Violet grisaille. I think it will work better.
Hi Amy- I applaud your desire to keep experimenting and have it be something you are satisfied with. I think you were very close with this view. It just needed to have the same saturation of color on the shaded left side as it did on the balance of the orange, but as you say that is sometimes easier said than done. I am anxious to see your new painting! Good luck!
Thanks Doug, hoping to get started on it this weekend.

I love that you are experimenting with this, Amy! You’re totally right–I hadn’t thought of that, but, yes, if the dark red area is on the shadow side, this may work out better. Glad to see this drawing develop more. You are doing a great job.
