Toad Orchid Study- I can’t figure out how to draw petals that are straight vertical towards me- they always look chopped off instead of sticking up towards me. Any suggestions??
Hi Cassandra, I know the problem. Your brain just doesn’t want to see them so crunched. Extra careful measurement and making use of the highlight and shadow aspects helps.

Yes, those foreshortened petals are always the toughest. Careful measuring and some toning to show that the petal is coming toward you (dark in the places farther away and getting lighter as it approaches the eye) can help. But really it just takes lots of practice. Use the “midvein” of the petal to help create the movement and direction you want, and then add the outer edges of the petal after, using the midvein as a guide. Love this study page! I especially like the flower in the middle-that’s a great view to choose. 🙂
