Am I finished?? Suggestions pls. Should the leaf behind the two flowers be darker? Was afraid it would be the same value as the flowers so did not darken it.
Hi Carol. I think this is a well-balanced compostition, but I do think that finding a way to darken that back leaf would add more depth overall. I understand your concern about having the value be too close to the flowers – I am sure that Wendy, Vern, and Doug will have good suggestions about how to do this.
Hi Carol- this is a beautiful drawing! I agree with your and Amy’s opinion that the back leaf should be darker. Considering it’s position behind the two flowers the leaf would definitely be partially in shadow. I would not darken the entire leaf, but add the shadow that would be cast by the flower on the left. I think something that would also help is to lighten the inside cup on the right side of the middle flower. It seems like there would be a highlight there and by doing that both flowers flanking the leaf would not be the same value as the leaf. One other area confuses me. On the two leaves on the left I can’t tell where one starts and the other ends. The curved area mid way up the bottom leaf belongs to which leaf? If it is part of the top leaf it needs to connect to that leaf in the open area between the leaves. If it is part of the bottom leaf then I would change the left edge so it doesn’t line up with the edge of the top leaf. I will post a quick sketch so it will be easier to see what I mean.

Hi Carol, this is looking great! I’m really loving the depth of the flowers, especially the one on the top right–that fold over!!! I agree with what Doug said above; you could darken the leaf (especially on the left leaf plane), and it would sit behind those flowers a bit more. I also think he’s right about lightening the right side of the funnel on the left flower, that way you get some nice contrast against the leaf once it’s a bit darker. And, Doug, I love this sketch–very clear, and helpful. Great work, Carol!!!
THANKYOU both so much for the input!! A second and third pair of eyes see things that one just doesn’t see after staring at a drawing for hours! And thanks Doug for those excellent sketches, it’s a perfect method of ‘explaining’ what doesn’t get through verbally. ( I guess most of us on this feed are visual learners😁) I shall get to work on this. But perfectly explained!
