I am working on this drawing and wanted to send it now to obtain your ideas on how to make the red look bright.. I am using mainly Pale Geranium Lake and using Dark Red and Dark Sepia for shading. I don’t think that it is not the choice of colour that would give brightness but how they are applied. I s that correct?
Hi Helene- even at this stage this is a gorgeous drawing! In the past Rita has said she used a red pen to achieve that rich, deep red. I am traveling and away from my supplies, but you can get a similar color with a combination of some of the pencils. I don’t know what color red you are actually trying to reach, but I know I commonly use madder when working on deep red subjects. I would avoid using the dark sepia for the shading if you are having a problem with the brightness. In addition to the dark red, maybe a dark blue in place of the dark sepia.. To reach a deep, rich color it relies on the amount of saturation you apply. I would play around on test paper. I can’t wait to see the finished piece!

Rita’s work sent just before mine is beautifully bright. How was that achieved?
