Hi Cathie- the spike flower is nicely drawn! They are not easy to draw and you have done a beautiful job! I would suggest you add toning to the overlaps on both the roots and the stem and leaves. There is going to be a shadow created when (for example) a root crosses over another root and that shaded area should be toned. This lets the viewer know which item is in front and what is behind. Because of all the veins on the leaves there are areas that are hard to read and the overlap toning would help clarify those areas and the drawing overall. Remember that highlights also help clarify what is going on in addition to the range of toning. The highlights on the leaves have gotten lost. The roots are a little more complicated. In addition to toning the overlaps you want to tone roots according to where they are positioned and where the light source is. Roots furthest back will be darker than ones that are in the mid space and naturally ones in the front would be the lightest. Finally, if a root is an elongated cylinder (which they often are) each root should have arc toning to convey their cylindrical form. If your roots are fairly flat they still need the position toning and the overlap toning. Nice job!
Wow, thank you so much for all these thoughtful and helpful recommendations on how to improve this sketch .I will most definitely try this again with a more mindful approach. Thanks!
