Great turnip Deborah! It is beautifully drawn with good attention to the details! There are a couple of things to consider. If a subject is very shiny, that is portrayed by having a very white highlight as you have shown here. I don’t think of turnips as being particularly shiny and if that is the case with yours I would add some color and tone down the highlight. The toning on the left side of the turnip should be a 3-4 on the tone scale. The left side edge is not as dark because it is closer to the light source. Your turnip needs more of a range of mid to dark shadow toning to the right of the main highlight transitioning to right edge of the turnip as those areas are not as close to the light source. Right now your left edge is as dark or darker than the right side. After you add the darker toning on the right you still might need to lighten the toning on the left side. By doing this it will emphasize the form of the turnip.
Thank you so much for your help! This was the first veggie I drew in the first class I took here, and will definitely address these issues. I will also practice my toning.
Hi Deborah- I would never guess this is your first veggie! It is already a wonderful drawing and with the tweaks I suggested it will be even more so. I look forward to seeing more of your work!
so realistic
