Hi Denise- the roots look good! Remember that there will be roots in the forefront, the middle and the back and they will be toned accordingly. Even though they can be very narrow, remember that roots are elongated cylinders so they should have an indication of a range of tones on each individual root to convey their form. With the plaid exercise where you are illustrating having elongated cylinders crossover each other, you need to have the range of tones from 1-9 on each cylinder. Once that is done you can add the shadow tones that would be created when one cylinder crosses over another cylinder. You can easily set up a grid model at home using pencils, chopsticks, etc. and once it is lit appropriately have a great reference.
