You have a good range of tones Emily. It looks like you are using a cold press watercolor paper so you are getting a lot of texture. For lessons like this being done in graphite you can use a smooth drawing paper (rather than the more expensive hot pressed watercolor paper). You might want to try the lesson again when you get a smooth paper.
