This is a tricky lesson, but what you are striving for is to take the 9 tones you did in the squares and translate them onto a sphere. Right now you have a highlight, the dark edge and the rest of it looks mostly like all the same tone. The dark edge on the right (which should be as dark as your #9 square) should not be a strong sliver. That dark color should segue to your #8 tone and then segue to #7, etc, etc. Each tone will blend together with the next tone and transition lighter as it moves toward the highlight. And then transition to a #3 or 4 on the left side edge. The highlight is too high and should move down and a little to the right. You can see the tone you have around it is not the #1 on your square lesson. Keep practicing your toning to get nice smooth even layers of tone. One of the goals is it to not see the pencil marks. It will take some practice, but you will get there!
Oops. I hit “enter” mistakenly. How do I know how much value to give for each section of the sphere? Or is that just something I have practice & observe? thank you
Practice feathering your tones so that you create a smooth transition from dark to light. This takes practice, but after awhile, it will become second nature. Use a sharp pencil and small, delicate strokes and take your time. You are on the right track!

Thank you for your explanation. I totally misunderstood the lesson. 🙂
