I’m feeling a little stuck on this one. It seems the more I try to develop the multiple layers of color, the more it feels both over-worked and underdeveloped at the same time, and I don’t know how to redeem it.
Hi Ginger, When you are feeling frustrated and confused about what to do next because you are not sure what needs development in a drawing, that is a good time to stop and ask yourself some questions to help you evaluate your work. Make sure to get out your evaluate your work checklist:https://drawbotanical.com/lesson/botanical-drawing-getting-started/ page 8. Take a look at the components for evaluating your work and pay attention to your range of tones as I think that is the problem here as well as your reflective highlight. I think you need 1. a bit more of lighter tones close to your highlight, filling in the highlight more so it is much smaller. 2. darken your reflective highlight as it is too light a value. Another idea is to try a wider branch so you have more time to develop your values (tones).
Thank you for the great feedback. I think I start out ok with the range of tones, but get a bit muddled the more color I add. I will start a new subject and practice some more, paying attention to those details.

@gingerlily are you using watercolor paper? If not, that may be the way to achieve more layers of color. This is a great start! You’ve gotten a great range of tones on your arc tone bar. Keep it up!
Thank you for your feedback! I am using watercolor paper. I am still very novice with my use of color, so I think I really need a lot more practice to combine color with good toning. I will keep at it!
