The photography struggle is real :). This photo actually look pretty good. Natural light is best. I like to photograph my drawings near a window. Bright, cloudy days are best. On a sunny day, I close my shades (which are light filtering shades) before taking the photo. On bright, cloudy days I’ll often take my drawings outside to photograph them. Even going through all of this rigmarole it’s still a struggle, though. Anyone else have suggestions??
Really nice color matching and details on these branches, Heather. The shadows at those overlaps are wonderful. You could still push that 3-D cylinder form a bit more on that branch that is on top. It can be really hard with something so matte (because you don’t get that shiny highlight) and detailed/patterned, but you can exaggerate the shadow side and the highlight area to help create that 3D illusion. Your cast shadows are looking much better!
I messed around in photoshop with the stick that’s on top to show you what I mean. I removed the dark outline on the top edge of that stick, darkened the bottom part of the stick, and added a little highlight to the top. It’s not great, but I thought it might give you an idea of what I mean. Do you see how those changes takes your stick from flat to a little more 3D?
WOW – YES! Subtle but yes, I can see what you mean, now! I was having trouble (even with a very sharp point) getting the darks dark ENOUGH, but now I see what I could have done. YAY! Thank you for that š
@pgthompson – any tricks for getting colors to match reality a little better when photographing them. (Iām not using a flash.)
