Hi Jette- nice job on this apple! There are a couple of areas to revisit. The toning on the shadow is much smoother. I would just lighten it a little and have it angle back more. The standard for lighting is that light is coming over your left shoulder at a 45 degree angle. Your shadow placement looks like it was based on the light coming form the very left and it doesn’t jive with the placement of your highlight, which is well positioned. The other area to work on is the toning. There should be dark to mid-range toning on the right side to illustrate the apple’s round form. If you did not see that toning on your apple then you might have too many light sources where you do your artwork. Many of us have fashioned backboards by taping two pieces of board together so it can open to be “V” shaped. You can use scrap pieces of foam core, matte board or even the backs of drawing paper pads. It helps eliminate background distractions and unwanted light sources. Keep up the good work!
Your comments on light source is really interesting – I was at a table , bright outside Morning light from the left, but not from behind me. This is a great idea with the artificial environment to eliminate light and I can see that I need to be more vigilant at actually setting the correct environment. I can totally see what you are saying about the right hand side and it does jive with the light source. Thanks for comments – Will try again with your suggestions.
