I drew three different little fairy tale eggplants, so that I could practice different techniques of drawing the patterning on their skin. I wasn’t totally sure how to handle the highlights on this shape. As always, any feedback would be appreciated!
These are lovely! The variegations are handled beautifully. You have the right idea with the highlights, (I’m assuming based on your observations). They would define the tubular aspect and the bulbous aspect with a little break in between where the eggplant narrows. However, I think they need to be the lightest spot on the eggplant (lighter than the whites of the variegation.) and a bit harder edged. Eggplants tend to be shiny. A sharper edged highlight will indicate this. On all of them I’d also continue the shadow tone toward the highlight slightly more on the right side and add a bit of reflective light.

I agree with Katy; you’ve done a great job with the patterning, but perhaps tone down the white of the patterning in a few places so that your highlights can be reserved for the brightest white. Love these–they each have their own personality and cute “hats!” 🙂

Thank you Katy and Vern! I appreciate all your helpful suggestions and positive words!
Ooh these are so gorgeous! I love them – their cascading/falling down the page – I can feel the weight of them. Beautiful.
Thanks so much Sam!
