Hi Jill, such a fun interesting subject. The view you chose is very fun. Love all the shapes the negative space creates. You have done a great job.I think I would make the highlight a bit smaller ,bringing it located in the highest light area right now (on the big highlight. )I am also curious to see what a cast shadow would look like but I wouldn’t put it in at first, just try photographing your gourd with the correct light and see what the cast shadow looks like. Then I would try it on tracing paper, and let us evaluate first before putting it in.
@wendy Hi Wendy, thank you for your feedback and helpful suggestions! I have made the highlight smaller. I also tried out the cast shadow on tracing paper. I’m not sure if I’m getting it right. I tried lighting the gourd with a flashlight and then just an overhead light. Would love to know your thoughts. Thank you!
Looking great, Jill. I love that swirly stem and all the awesome detail here. And the way the orange and green colors interact with each other without becoming muddy. In my opinion, this looks great without a cast shadow… @sam-mcwilliams@katylyness@doug-milne what do y’all think about a cast shadow here?
Hi Jill, @jill-amadei: I think the shadows could work, but be sure to add a bit of the stem which isn’t in your photo. Your highlight made smaller is on the way but still can get messed up more by putting some tones inside the highlight so it becomes shimmery rather that a solid light spot. Look closely at your photo to see how you might render a highlight. I think you can go for the cast shadow if you want but keep it subtle. I would use verithin black and gray first, or a watercolor subtle wash first. Have you done many cast shadows before? If not let us know and perhaps try it first on something else.
Thanks so much for the feedback @wendy@vern and @sam-mcwilliams I will work on the highlight a bit more. I have not done very many cast shadows, except for on more basic shapes than this. So I feel a little intimidated by the cast shadow of this gourd. I will practice on something else. I have many gourds I’d like to draw! Thanks again!

Wow, Jill, gorgeous! What a character. I love the addition of the stem – great call Wendy. I like it without the cast shadow, too. Your call. 🙂
