Gorgeous as always. You are now officially having fun with cast stem shadows. This leaf is bowing down. 🙂 I feel like a highlight or some darker tones would increase the drama and keep me involved longer. And, like Wendy always says, that one big hole is getting me stuck… How do we address that team Draw Botanical? I love that little fold in the top right juncture. Beauty.
Hi- When I started taking classes at NYBG the instructors really stressed that you should use as perfect a specimen as possible and that mantra has always stayed with me. As you gain experience and work in to your own style there are subjects where the abnormalities, etc are what makes it interesting and you throw caution to the wind. With this leaf, since there are no other holes I would have fudged it and filled in the hole. It is such a beautiful drawing and I do find the hole distracting on an otherwise gorgeous piece of art!

I love the crisp edges and leaf margins here, Jill. And the cast shadow! I agree with Doug; I’d try to cover up that hole–it becomes a focal point, and I don’t think that’s the intention. (I love that brown-green color you got!! SO “autumn!”)
Thank you all for the helpful feedback on this leaf! I wilI definitely keep your input in mind about the hole. I added some darker tones as @sam-mcwilliams suggested and posted the updated version in a separate post. Do you think that helped to increase the drama? I appreciate your thoughts! Thanks
I don’t mind the hole at all here. Love the stem and the cast shadow too! Truthfully there is no one way to do anything, but it is nice to think about what and why you might do something, and love to hear everyone’s opinions. I feel like the tiny holes are like shining stars….
Thank you @wendy for your feedback! I am glad to hear you don’t mind the hole. I really appreciate hearing all of the different perspectives here on the art feed. I find it really helpful and encouraging! Thank you (:
