Hi Karen – if it weren’t for the stem the skin looks like an onion to me. The colors and the thin pattern lines give me that feel. I think you could use a range of dark and mid-range tones to emphasize the apples form. As I said on your petal posting, the shadow should be much lighter and fade lighter as it moves away from the subject.
