Hi Karen- the thing I noticed on the original drawing is that it needed more toning. That is why since you have added color there is hardly any toning visible. As you add more layers of color you have to keep adjusting the range of tones – especially when it needed more toning to begin with. You can still go in and add a range of tones (don’t forget to leave highlights in the appropriate places). It is the same with the leaves – some are in the light and some are in shadow because of their position and overlaps, but I don’t see highlights or the appropriate toning. Adding that would give the leaves some interest and make them look more realistic. You got this!!!!
Thank you Doug. I started doodling this on really cheap paper, which now has a hole in it, but I will go back and add toning and highlights.

Yes! Doug nailed it here. There is a balance to be struck as you progress through a drawing, where you’ll want to continually evaluate that initial grisaille layer to see if it needs to be darkened as you go, so that it doesn’t disappear! 🙂

These comments are so encouraging. And helpful. Thank you!
Even our sketches on cheap paper are important and beloved. 🙂
