Hi Kathy- most of the squares have nice smooth toning. There are a couple of squares that have blemishes, like #2 and 6 that you could smooth out. Thinking down the line those blemishes could really stand out on a finished drawing. I think you could get a little more tonal range in the squares. If you consider that #5 is half way between white and black you could go darker with #5 and then alter the other squares accordingly. You are almost there!
Thanks for your comments. I debated for a while with myself whether to go slightly darker with #5. As I am still learning how to apply the pencil shading very softly, I decided to leave #2 as it was as I don’t have the skill yet to apply such a light shading evenly. I think I will revisit this exercise a few times(or maybe a lot!) I do not live close to an art store and we have just had a total lockdown here for a week, so I intend to stock up on Dark Sepia to continue my practice. Do you have any tips for applying a smooth layer of colour to the paper. I find that I struggle to get the colour into the indents in the paper. I assumed that many layers will achieve this but as there are so few layers for #2 that I cannot get a smooth tone. Thanks in advance Kathy
