Hi Yelena- this is a fun page! The tomatoes are nicely rendered and the color selection and saturation is very good! Tomatoes obviously come in odd shapes, but I would fudge the shape of the tomato in the center. All the other tomatoes have rounded shapes and the severe angle on the one in the middle really throws things off. I am not seeing the same amount of toning on the three in the middle, which was so well done on the other three. Lastly, I would take another look at the highlights. Many of the tomatoes have a lot of highlights some of which are in places I would not expect to see them and conversely the large tomato on the top left hardly has a highlight. Great job! I think with a couple of changes it would be better yet!
Hi Doug! Thank you for your feedback. I really appreciate it. This is my first colored pencil drawing, so I am at the beginning)) As for the tomatoes, they were really so wierdly looking. This is why it was interesting to draw them. As for the highlights, you are right. I saw them in many places)) And I was confused a little bit by the form. Once eaqch tomato consist of several rounded parts I was trying to draw them as an object with several highlights. Also, I used dark sepia of primary layer in two above and one below. And it turned so dark every time! So difficuilt to find the balance., As for the middle row, I tried Warm Grey IV for a primary layer. They look a little bit lighter. But I should admit that the process itself is fascinating! I enjoy it greatly. I am currently taking Botanical art for beginners with Dianne Sutherland (watercolor). Even with my very limited experience I would say that both watercolor and colored pencil are great fun!
First coloured pencil drawing – wow! Have you tried red violet as your grisaille shading/toning? Sometimes I’ll use the red violet for my grisaille and then just use some dark sepia at the end lightly to darken where needed to round the form in shadow. These tomatoes have a great glow to them.
Hi Sam! Thanks for prompt. I mean red violet and dark sepia.. I’ll definitely try it. At this point when I do not have much experience, I draw as I feel)) But it is so comforting to know what to do.
