You are starting to get good form on your sphere Linda! There is also good transition of tones! The lighter area looks very similar in tone and part of the problem is I don’t see a true highlight. Establishing a highlight and making sure you have a nice, light transition away from it will help a lot! Reflected highlights are really tricky!!! Yours looks like it is on the outside of the sphere rather than on it. I would also change the position to be lower on the sphere so that you are conveying that the bottom of the sphere is sitting on a surface. Reflected highlights are the glow cast up from the surface. They usually are not the same thickness along their length and they often blend into the dark toning above them to achieve the glow effect. Cast shadows are based on the shape of the subject and I would expect more of a rounded shape rather than the raw edge shown here. The front edge will angle back close to a 45 degree angle. They start off dark as you have done here and then there should be a smooth transition as the the tone fades lighter as it moves away from the subject. You don’t want the overall cast shadow to be too dark so that it competes with your main subject. A couple of alterations as I have mentioned and this will be great!
Thank you Doug. I knew the reflective highlight was wrong. It made the sphere look like a Whoopie Pie. Thank you for all of the encouragement. This is such a nice positive group.

Bonus because it’s fun to think of Whoopie pies. 🙂
