Hi friends! My question today is this: How do I manage to illustrate subjects that are “flat”? My husband commented that the left side of this leaf looked more believable because of its curled edges. Thank you for your suggestions.
Hi Paige- this is a beautiful leaf and I think you have done a great job giving it form and interest! Leaves are often very flat and toning it with highlights and shadows and vein details are what give it life and interest. The dark tone down the center really conveys that both sides of the leaf are folding up from the middle and it does not appear to be flat. That is reinforced by the dark tones on the left and the placement of the highlights on the right. I especially like the highlight on the right – second leaf from the bottom. The curve of the highlight really illustrates how that part of the leaf curves up. I hate to disagree, but I think this is a very successful leaf!!!!!
@doug-milne thank you for this feedback Doug. {and a secret- that highlight shape you mentioned: it wasn’t intentional… but I totally see what you mean. Yay for happy accidents.}
