I thought this was going well and then I looked at it and suddenly it seemed overworked and flat. I definitely need to pull out some highlights… but what else do I do wrong?
Hi Paige- I agree with your observations and it is great that you recognize what is wrong and what is needed to improve it. I agree that one reason the petals are reading flat is because, as you said, it is missing highlights. It is also missing some mid-range tones and the dark toning is very dark. I would lighten the dark toning in the well and probably enhance the coppery color that is in the center of all the petals. The two other petals in the well should also have some darker range of tones at their base, not just the bottom petal. I would expect the stamens to cast a shadow at least on the upper right petal. Details like that can add more realism to the drawing. You will get there!!! There is a recent day Lily post on the ArtFeed and Wendy often draws day lilies that would be good for reference.
