This is a ‘Flying duck orchid’. I found them with my brother for the first time this year. If you don’t believe the incredible shape and colour, you’ve got to Google it, we’ve got some weird things in Australia. 🙂
Nature is so wonderfully weird! It really does look like a flying duck. I think we need to convince Wendy to add in an Australia trip to the schedule! You captured that deep purple color, and the shine on the “duck’s head” beautifully. And is that a nice plump green ovary under the “wings”? That little highlight by the attachment point of that front “wing” is really nice, and adds some lovely dimension. Thanks for sharing this wonderfully weird orchid with us.
@pgthompson Thanks so much Pam, such a cute little orchid! You guys would love the plants in Australia. 🙂 If you ever come I’ll have to take time off work and join in the workshops. 🙂 I’m not sure if it was an ovary under the wings but I think so… they are a protected plant so I wasn’t allowed to pick them or pull them apart or anything… it’s still a bit of a mystery.
