Just posting this work in progress of a milkweed. This flower head is driving me a little crazy. I’m having trouble getting it right, so wanted to post it to keep me accountable to keep going :). I plan to add some individual flower blowups, and a cross section blowup on the bottom. Help me keep going 🙂
That leaf is so inspiring! I love the toning on the stem and on the edge of the upturned bit. The red in the mid vein is really nice too. I can’t help you with the flower but I have to add that you have inspired me to get back to my latest drawing.
Thanks so much Patricia. I remember reading somewhere about a colored pencil artist who has a sign that says “KEEP GOING” at his workspace. I think I need to do the same :).

Yes! KEEP GOING! This is going to look great, Pam. The flower head is looking awesome. Just try to keep those details sharp, and give us lots of little dark areas in between flowers. And remember that the whole flower head itself is a 3-dimensional form! The “sphere” of flowers should also have a shadow side and a “highlight” area where things are a bit lighter. Agree that that leaf is looking excellent.
I love the edge of that leaf! I just posted a magnolia leaf and my edge looks outlined and to save my life, I couldn’t figure out how to make it look more natural. I’m going to take a close look at your technique. Your painting is going to be beautiful.

Thanks for the advice Vern!

Thank you so much! I’m still working on it, but made some more progress today. I’ll check out your magnolia leaf post.
Yeah looking so good! It’s so fun to see the build-up/creation of it all. 🙂
