Starting a Lobelia cardinalis drawing. Studying one of the flowers enlarged. Having trouble giving it form since so much of the color is flat. Do I try to exaggerate the highlights and shadows to make it more interesting and to give it the illusion of three dimensional form? Or is it okay that itβs kind of flat looking (since the flower is kind of flat looking)?

Exaggerate!! π Yes, I think you can enhance the 3d form a little more by creating a few highlights and shadows. Even if the flower appears flat in real life, it’s better to emphasize the 3-dimensionality on paper… you can create highlights even if you don’t see them! π
