This is homework for the first week of a composition class that I’m taking at NYBG. We are supposed to use the rule of 3rds and value placement to creat a focal point. I get the rule of thirds, but am a little confused about value placement. I used my dead boggy things. I ignored the actual values of the objects, and just assigned dark, medium, and light values to them instead. Hope that’s what I was supposed to do. It was a fun exercise regardless.
It certainly makes me focus on the darkest sphere shape, especially supported by many elements pointing to it as well.

I like to think of value placement as a way to create depth. Whether you assign darker objects to the background or foreground, I think that values help us move around the page, as well as “into” it. In this drawing, yes, the darkest object is the focal point, but could you move us around the page a bit more with a hint of dark somewhere else as well? Maybe in those berry bunches? I’m not sure if that’s what they want you to do in class, but that’s my advice. I think more balance is needed here.
