This is a painting that I’ve been working on for practice for my final NYBG project which is going to involve ferns. This is Sensitive Fern. It has both sterile and fertile fronds instead of spores on the backs of theirs leaves. I’m also thinking about doing a painting of Cinnamon Fern which also has sterile and fertile fronds.
Beautiful drawing, Pam! This is one of my favorite ferns and grows all over in my woodland, sometimes it hangs out with Joe Pye and the meadow plants, sometimes it chills out in the cool shady hollow. The sterile fronds turn yellow and disappear as the first cold weather hits but the fertile fronds are poking up all over year round. Ostrich fern grows down in my hollow and also has sterile and fertile fronds. I think cinnamon fern has the most lush fertile fronds and I’m certain you’ll do a great job drawing them. Can’t wait.

Exceptional Pam! Love the composition! Great to learn more about them from you and Glenn.
Thanks, Glen! I’m really excited to draw the cinnamon fern. Their fertile fronds are so beautiful.
