I had a very difficult time getting the quality I have on the leaves, onto the flower petals- it was a combination of water color and pencil – I know something isn’t right but can’t quite figure out how to remedy

Hi Rita, What I notice here is a lack of light tones in the flower. You want your petals to have a full range of tones from dark to light. Here, I see some nice darks in the places where the petals overlap, lots of great saturated midtones, but I don’t see a lot of highlights in the flower, and I think that would make all the difference. Look again at your flower under the light source and see if you can find places where the light reflects off the petals. Adding these highlights and light tones will help make the flower look more three-dimensional, and also make it so our eyes can differentiate between all those petals. It’s difficult to achieve, but once you have that balance of dark and light, it’s amazing how a drawing will come to life.
