I have a technique question. Do you draw the tomatoes, then fill in the color on the sepals? I struggle with them becoming indistinct. These have been erased and overworked in an attempt to improve, but there is such a heaviness to them.
Hi Sara, I’ve never thought about how and when I draw the sepals. I know I draw the sepals in first, then I think I start toning the sphere of the tomato. But it all kind of works hand in hand. Especially if the tomatoes are a similar hue to the sepals The sepals are generally lighter than the tomato, so they are defined by the darker color behind them, as yours are here. I’m going to take a look at drawing of tomatoes I have done and get back to you on that.
I recall that when I was drawing tomatoes I liked to put my toning or grisaille everywhere before I started putting in colour. I think these drawings and sepals look excellent.

Clarification: When I say “draw the sepals first” I don’t mean before I draw the rest of the tomato, I just mean before I start toning.
And, yum! BLT!
Also the shadow the sepals cast will help separate them.
Hi Sara, you should try fried green tomato with bacon, lettuce, mayo and toast. It will be yummy
