As usual your toning is good! I like the way you are getting surface texture. I also really like the greens and magentas I am seeing. I have the same comments as on your other drawings. I want to see a core shadow and reflective light. Also the bottoms of these could be more clearly rendered. Are they open, or closed to make a flat surface. If they are open, I want to see a shadow on the left side and a bit of a lighter area on the right. That will show that light is being blocked and will create a depth.
Hi Sharon – good job showing the highlights on the stems which are cylinder shapes. You could darken the right/shadow sides even more to enhance the 3d illusion. Make sure your highlights stay left of center as best you can on skinny stems. And good job observing the darker portions behind the overlapping section.
Are these eucalyptus nuts? They are such an interesting shape and color. I love the red fading into the green. You are getting some really nice darks here. I think you could lighten up your midtones and highlights a bit to give the nuts a rounder feel, and to brighten them up a bit. If I’m right about them being eucalyptus nuts, it means that you are doing a good job – . I’ve never seen eucalyptus nuts before, and if I was able to figure it out from your drawing, that’s pretty cool!
Yes, these are eucalypt nuts. There are many varieties. I found these at a local florist here in Australia at Christmas time. I will try to lighten the midtones. I remember thinking they had disappeared. I chose these as I do not have any access to actual acorns as per Wendy’s lesson.
