I have a few questions and thoughts about this so far. Is the highlight too big or oddly shaped? I was after two areas of highlights. Is the the little “foot” of onion skin too distracting? I kind of like it, and have added and reduced it. I left some room for a slice or more skin, but I’m playing around with it and think a diptych or triptych of slices, halves, etc. will work better. The opened onion is intensely “fragrant”.

Sheila, I think the highlight is very close to the right shape… think of the highlight as almost conforming to the pattern on the skin–there are those striations that follow the cross-contour of the onion, and I think, in a way, the highlight could follow those contours as well. It also might stretch to follow the veins in the skin, or even be softly interrupted by those veins. (if you need a visual aid, let me know) Re: the “foot” at the bottom… the only thing that is distracting to me about this is that my brain expects roots at the bottom, so if something is protruding from that area, my mind thinks it must be roots… but it’s not. So, I love the shape and curl it’s making, but I can see why it might be distracting. :/ I’d love to hear what other people think. Love this idea of adding more slices, etc, and wow, yeah, get yourself a mask to wear lol, those red onions can be so pungent!!
i think overall this is a beautiful drawing. I honestly didn’t get distracted by the position of the onion in space, with roots coming out at the top, but maybe that’s me. I’m a retired critical care nurse, and the base of the human heart is position ‘up’ in the chest, and the apex points down…maybe is an interesting precedent. Anyway, I love this drawing.
Mary and Vern, thanks for your feedback. I’ve uploaded two photos, trying out roots and onion aroma therapy (?) of a half that oxidized in a fun purplish way.
