Great job! The leaves are nicely done and the roots are great! Love the mix of the dried and succulent roots! I am confused by the flower itself. Is it a Lady Slipper Orchid? Orchids are so intricate and beautiful looking face on and might have had more impact than the side view.

Wow, really nice leaves and roots here, Shellie! Love how that one leaf on the right curls back–that’s hard to do!! I have similar thoughts as Doug with regard to the flower… More often than not, the flower is the “star of the show” or the focal point of a composition. Here, though, I am fascinated by the leaves and roots, and I hardly worry about the flower at all. Perhaps that is intentional. But in the future, I would try to draw our focus to the flower itself, by choosing a view that shows the structure well, and also darkening behind the flower so that our eyes pick up on the contrast between the flower in front and the leaves behind. I hope that makes sense… I know it’s a lot of information… I think you’re doing an excellent job here!!
Hi Doug and Vern, I have no idea what type of flower it is. It is a dying orchid in my window that I am trying to revive. Thank you for your comments. I was actually trying to focus on the roots and the lesson. I just drew the leaves and flower because they were there. I also had no real idea how to draw the flower. Honestly, it was a guess. I usually draw animals and I always leave out the flowers around them because I have no idea how to do it. I realized that my pictures could be so much better with the background. I don’t know if I can even draw this again like this but I will try.
