Honeycrisp apple with light source from behind. Not the best choice of light source direction, but I was at my desk in front of a window. Struggled with the value on front right of apple. I added red and yellow pattern all over, burnished, then added tones. Maybe I should not have burnished first as the tone on the right front of apple is a bit mottled? Suggestions welcomed on how I could have handled this differently. Thanks.

My first suggestion is to use that upper left light source whenever possible. And when it’s not possible, you can always use the light source in your head to know where shadows and highlights will be on a round-ish object like this. I think you did a nice job with the pattern, but, yeah, I feel like I am missing the toning that would make this look more 3-dimensional. I would give this another try with light source on the left and start with the toning first and then add the pattern and color.
