Hi Sylvia- this is an interesting image in blue. There are some things I would suggest to make it a more successful botanical drawing. The branches are missing a range of tones and a highlight which would convey the branch’s form. Even though there is no highlight, your cast shadow suggests that the light source is on your right. With the other post of the single branch your cast shadow indicated the light source was on the left. The botanical standard is if you are right handed the light comes over your left shoulder at a 45 degree angle. If you are left handed it is is the reverse, the light comes over your right shoulder at a 45 degree angle. Understanding shadows and how to tone a subject may come easier if you are consistent with the position of your light source.
Thank you for that helpful feedback. The blue happened because I took the photo outside trying to avoid shadows on my paper! But the cast show here is all wrong, and I think that’s because the light in my house kept moving as a worked. I will need to get a better setup.
