Very satisfying! You got such a good subtle texture here. I have the same trouble with shadows! Sometimes I try the prismacolor pencils for shadows, but depending on the color of the specimen, the gray prismacolor pencil can look too blue in comparison. Here that may be the case. Is this one done with dark sepia? You could try erasing it a bit and mixing some lighter gray in. This is pretty rough textured paper, too, so it might be hard to get it to be a “quiet” shadow as Wendy calls it. Shadows are something I struggle with a lot, which is why I’m so talkative on the subject!
Thanks for the pointers Lise. Yes, I was using dark sepia and quite a rough paper. I’ve been using the pencils I have which are Colorsoft and Prismacolor. How clever of you to pick up on that! I’ll have to invest in the right tools when I get chance 🙂 I wasn’t happy with the fade so that’ s probably why. Really appreciate your comments, thank you.
Lovely highlight here! Again, your shadow is a little dark, but it fades nicely into the paper.
Thank you, yes, I think I’m using the wrong pencil/colour or something. Time to experiment.
Sometimes it helps to start with something like Warm Grey…
Ok, thanks, I was using Dark Sepia. Way too dark…

What a beautiful surface on the acorn!
Thank you!
