Nestled about the Hudson River, Olana, the historic home of Hudson River School Founding Artist, Frederich Church, offers an amazing landscape with stunning views of the distant Catskill Mountains. Surrounded by a lush landscape of hills, wild flower meadows, and an apple orchard, the unusual, magnificent home he created and built has been an inspiring place to teach and draw.
Over the years of teaching botanical art at this picturesque location, I desired to honor the specific places where these plants grew. This inspired me to create a series called “Plants in Place,” in which each portrait references the place where the plant grew with a landscape background, or perhaps a logo from a local farm.
Rachel Tice, Olana Museum Store Director of Retail Operations, asked me to create a unique painting of a morning glory for a new seed pack they would be offering from the Hudson Valley Seed Co. I showed her my previous drawings created at Olana, and she was inspired! She asked if I would create a series of Note Cards that they could sell in their spectacular shop at Olana based on these drawings, along with the morning glory painting I created specifically for the seed pack.
Upon receiving the final art, Rachel said, “I wanted to say thank you. These are some of the most beautiful note cards I have ever carried. They are a gorgeous addition to the store… Thank you so much and looking forward to doing more work together in coming months and year.”
