Workshop Description

Learn how to draw elegant twists, flowing rolls, and delicate folds with confidence! In this engaging workshop, we’ll explore the graceful movement of strappy botanical leaves (like those of lilies, alliums, and grasses) and ribbons to improve your ability to portray depth and dimension in your realistic renderings. Whether you’re a beginner or a more experienced artist, you’ll enjoy sharpening your observational skills and elevating your botanical compositions with a sense of realism and flow in this hands-on workshop inspired by the stunning images from Pierre Victor Galland’s book, Botanique et Ornement (1850s).

What We’ll Practice

🌿 Botanical Twists & Curls – Study how strappy leaves bend, roll, and fold to create graceful, natural movement in your artwork.

🎀 Ribbon Folds & Overlaps – Practice with ribbons to refine your understanding of depth, structure, and perspective in drawing.

✏️ Shading for Realism – Use light and shadow to emphasize dimension and create the illusion of form on white paper or tan kraft paper.

Recommended Supplies:

NOTE: In addition to our usual supplies, you may want some artist tape or masking tape to hold your subject in place. You may also want a piece of clear acetate to support your subject. Ribbons that work best are at least ½” wide and somewhat stiff with a smooth or shiny surface. Ribbon with wire in it holds its shape well, or you can use tape to hold it in place. Beginners may prefer a solid color ribbon, rather than a pattern.

Find all of the supplies that we recommend here. Feel free to follow along with any supplies you have (your result may just end up looking a little different). Our lessons are about a combination of fundamental 3D art concepts and colored pencil and watercolor technique, so you can skip the supplies-specific tips and still learn a lot about art basics including perspective, light source, composition, etc. One of the main points we teach is colored pencil and watercolor technique for slow, continuous toning, but as long as you are able to achieve the same blending result with your chosen materials, you can still benefit from our course lessons.
