Susan, are you using stonehenge aqua? The reason I ask, is because I have found that if I accidentally use the side of the paper that isn’t the smoother of the two sides, I can get some fuzziness and sometimes some fraying. If I use the smoother side, I don’t have that problem. If you buy your paper in a block, the side that isn’t the smoothest is…[Read more]

Beautiful colors on this autumn page, Cathie. I like how you were able to show those ridges on that gourd. You could add some more shadow color slowly on the right side and bottom of that gourd to make the whole thing look a bit more 3D, nice work.

@doug-milne Thanks for the tips, I’ll make some adjustments for sure. I really enjoyed the intricacies of the vine, nature is so amazing

Hi Cathie- this is a nice autumn study page! It is a really pleasing composition and the colors seem spot on! I think with the gourd and the acorns you could add more dark and mid-range toning to emphasize their form. Check the highlights on the acorns – they seem a little too close to the left edge. Good job!

Hi Susan- the branch segments are beautifully rendered!!!! They have a wonderful crispness to them which I always love seeing! Something to keep in mind is that the main highlight often is interrupted as it travels down a branch by knots, buds, side branches, etc. With the colored arc bar I would lighten the areas flanking the highlight. They is…[Read more]

Wow Maureen! Gorgeous pumpkin! Wonderful colors and form!!!! The sections of vine really elevate the image! I think the reflected highlight is a little too bright and I would tone it down a bit. I would look at the cast shadow again too. It seems a little too pale close to the pumpkin. I would have more dark toning close to the pumpkin and have it…[Read more]

I’m not happy with the sample on the left – my paper was worked too much and was starting to fray when I tried to add the reflective highlight.

Doug and Pam thank you for your comments. Pam, I am using stonehenge aqua in a block. I will try using the other side. I thought the side facing up was the correct side but perhaps the back will be better!

Also, f you push some greens darker on the leaf where it goes behind the flower it will make the paler yellows pop forward. Look for the areas where you can show contrast.
