I feel like the upper left flower needs an anchor – maybe a stem going off the left side of the page or the top? What do you all think.

Thanks Vern! That was the the intention but I wasn’t sure if it worked.

Becky, this is looking so nice. You captured the shape of this lemon very nicely. I love your shimmery highlight. Nicely done. I think you could lighten the outside edge of the left side of the fruit a bit. It looks like it’s about the same value as the shadow on the right side of the fruit, and it should be quite a bit lighter than the shadow on…[Read more]

Gorgeous Beverley! I love the interesting composition. You captured the way the light moves around those petals beautifully. I really like the colors you chose for your shadows in those petals. They get nice and dark without making them feel dirty. Well done. I think you could make those stems look a bit more 3D. But I also kind of like the…[Read more]

Thank you Pam. This lovely flower grows in my garden. Sadly the it only blooms for a few days.

Thank you Pam. Yes, light source coming from the right. I’m wondering if the highlight should be a longer vertical rectangle or oblong???

What a beautiful striking composition. Those bends and curves in those petals are great – masterful use of contour lines and light. And I love that little peak of whatever is inside that petal on the lower left. Wonderful.

I love everything about this. LOVE how you are keeping the curved tone bars in these drawings. It really adds to the overall composition. The lettering is lovely, and of course, the onion remains the beautiful star of the show. What a treat for your daughter. -

Welcome Becky! I can see why you were drawn to this fruit, it’s gorgeous. You got some beautiful shine on the surface. It shimmers beautifully. Is your light source coming from the upper right? If so, I would tone that left side a bit darker to try to show the overall 3D form. On beautiful subjects with a lot of detail and pattern, keeping the…[Read more]

Thank you for the comment. I was not familiar with this fruit either but found it at the grocery store and was drawn to the color! I probably should have started with a simple round thing (ha!). In any case, a picture is below. I feel that the highlights are a bit of a mess. I wasn’t sure what shape to consider this and how to do the highlight!!!!

Welcome Becky! I don’t recognize this fruit, but you have done a beautiful job! Gorgeous smooth toning and application and wonderful colors and saturation!!!! Does the fruit have a shiny skin? I am wondering if the highlights would be roundish as you have shown or more rectangular in shape. You could definitely use more dark and mid-tone toning o…[Read more]

Instantly recognisable as dragonfruit (I love them!). Beautiful drawing Becky, and really helpful to read the comments that were left by the instructors. Thanks for posting.

Becky, good question about the highlight. I do think you could make that highlight on the upper right a bit more vertically oblong. Good instincts! You could darken the highlight below it just a bit to show that it’s not quite as close to the light source as the one on the upper right.

Ahh, moving on to roots! This is beautifully done. I like the way you have indicated depth though the shadow of the under roots. My one comment would be to sharpen your pencil. (As silly as that sounds.) If only when you are drawing the front roots and leaves. That sharper contrast will help bring them forward in space.

Hi Maureen, This is a beautiful page. I love when I can learn about a plant while enjoying the beauty of a well crafted drawing. Good job!

Is there a lesson here about weeding your garden or enjoying the beauty of wild things? I love the tangle of this. As always, you have done as the best botanical artist do: you have told me a story.

Good Mary! I love all of the practicing that you are doing with these paper strips. It will pay off!
