Thank you for sharing your notes with us, Karen, sentiments that so many of us can relate to. – gives the drawing and observation so much more meaning. I think of my dad with the xmas cactus.

I can hear Wendy’s voice : make sure there are some obvious white highlights – like overdo them! – and some dark darks for contrast since we’re on a midtone paper. Wendy loves putting her obvious highlights in first and really saturating them.

Thanks Ishbel. Yes it’s graphite. New home. Missing my garden of 30 years 😢. Learning to appreciate the things growing seaside now. Will have to raid my friends’ gardens! 😊

Splendid, Dora. Restful, calm. It’s like breathing nicely. I hope the seaside and your friends’ gardens take good care of you.

I definitely saw the way off highlights and worked on them just now. Luckily I have the leaves still. Thanks, Doug.

@Doug Thanks, and thank you for commenting on the ginko highlights. They’re definitely off. I’ll work on them.

My eye goes right away to the glowing green/yellow to the left of the lower flower centre. I love the dark recess to light glow contrast there. The green/red palette is vibrant and the red edging of the petals is wonderful. Nice, delicate striations on the petals. And the red speckling- what a journey you went on here. Thanks for bringing me along. 🙂

I really need to work on my iphone photography I think. White paper often shows up too grey and when I fiddle with the editor, colours get a bit weird. You’re probably right that it is a bit strong especially because the white of the petals has dulled down too much. Here’s a different exposure

Fantastic Sheila!!!! The bright highlight on the ginkgo leaves is throwing me a bit. Love the use of the bittersweet vine along the top that the other subjects descend from!!!!

Sorry about the rubber band on the left side. I’ll retake the photo on a sunny day and work on holding the page down.

I’m really enjoying the scattered needles.

Thanks, Sam. Dried branch gave me the idea!

Thanks, Vern. I like cast shadows, although not always sure which subjects get or benefit from them.
-
@vern yes, I agree. Thanks. Maybe I’ll pile things up on the ground for more opportunities:)

Thanks Maureen. I started with watercolor, and then used both watercolor and colored pencil. -

Doug, it does kind of look like a birds nest, doesn’t it? That wasn’t my intention, but I like that it turned out that way 🙂 -

So precious and pleasing to the eye ! Are you capturing those fine lines with watercolor or pencil?

Great job Ishbel! Love the colors and your lettering too! This is a tricky view to do and you are mostly there, but I find the toning confusing. The right side looks lighter than the left, except the cast shadow is on the right. I think part of the reason is your reflected highlight is too light and needs to be toned down, Also there are a few…[Read more]
