Hi Sharon- the lesson for this overlap exercise is that these are elongated cylinders (such as dowels, etc). In that case the area where the underlying dowels are crossed by a dowel, there would not be a cast shadow on both sides of the crossed, lower dowel. On a vertical dowel that is crossed by a horizontal dowel the area below the horizontal…[Read more]

Hi Sharon, this is a great start. I really like your cast shadow on the right cherry. A few things you should think about: Be careful of the reflective light getting too light. The reflective light will almost always be darker than the highlight. I should be around a 4 on the value scale. Also try not to have an outline, especially around the…[Read more]

This looks great, Sharon. Nice full tonal range! What I’d like to see now is more of the sense of the light source, particularly where the cast shadows would fall. And a more distinct highlight on the rods. Think of that light coming from over your left shoulder. This would create a shadow on the right side.

Hi Cathie- leaves are such a challenge and they are different every time. I like that you used a variety of greens, but this reads very dark to me for a lilac leaf. The highlights read more as a different color in the leaf instead of highlights. I would keep practicing a variety of leaves. Really examine them to see the details and how the light…[Read more]

Great Wendy! I think you could add more toning to the lantern on the right. It does not have the same sense of form you achieved on the other two lanterns.

You are off to a good start Vicky! However, I don’t see the full range of tones on the pieces that would give them a cylindrical form. You have dark toning on the right and left side of the pieces where they cross. It gives the impression that the bottom pieces are gouged out to accept the top piece. Instead, If these pieces are round dowels, p…[Read more]

The colors are good Vicky. There is usually very evident highlights on onion skins and they tend to run vertically rather than being roundish. There are probably some other details to add for clarity and interest.

Hi Vicky! The grapes are beautifully rendered. The toning is very good and the grapes have nice form. A couple of things to think about. Your highlight could be brighter and I would lighten that area more. The cast shadow on the right grape is throwing me off. I think the shadow goes up too high along the right side and I would scale it back some.…[Read more]

Great job Vicky! The texture you created is wonderful and I also enjoy how the different sections of color blend together.
