Hi Harriet, I am speechless when looking at this. It is so lovely and delicate. I have a few questions that I know everyone would probably want to know. 1. Did you use watercolor and Colored pencil or just colored pencil? 2. How long did it take you to complete?approximately?

I haven’t added watrcolor yet, when I do will I loose the white vein lines in the leaves? Not sure where the highlight would be?

First of all, lovely drawing! Your veins will be less pronounced, as they will take the value of the watercolor. But that is not necessarily a bad thing. As I see them now, they should be toned down a bit. Use a very lightly tinted hue and carefully brush over areas that you want the veins to be less pronounced. For example the side veins,…[Read more]

Great job Liz- beautiful colors and nice attention to the details on the flowers! You captured the delicacy of the petals! A couple of areas you could revisit. I think the flower bud would benefit from adding a highlight. The sepals on both flower and bud are all the same color and tone disregarding that part would be in the light and part would…[Read more]

Love the delicacy of the petal details Margaret! Glad you still recognized her beauty despite her state of despair!

Nice rich saturated color Margaret! I think of tomatoes as often having shiny skins so I was expecting a whiter main highlight and maybe another highlight or two on the bumpy areas near the stem. The dark toning you have done has expressed beautiful form otherwise.

Hi Karen- this is a really nice citrus drawing! Great colors and saturation.! Agreed with Katy on making some changes to the cast shadow on the original version. However, I think this is a little too dark and I would lighten it a little. As you have done you want it to be darkest under the subject and fade lighter as it moves away, but you don’t w…[Read more]

Hi Cathie- I would give you the same advice for the gourd as I did for your tomato. It needs toning to give it form. We generally draw the form toning (grisailles toning) right after the sketch of the subject is complete. Once you have the toning in you start to add the color and details. There have been some amazing gourd drawings posted on the…[Read more]

Hi Cathie- you are off to a good start! The colors are good and the skin has that translucency that tomatoes have. What is missing is the dark and mid-range tones that will give the tomato form. The red/violet pencil is good to use for red subjects. The right side edge moving down along to the bottom area needs dark toning that will transition…[Read more]

Ha Cathie- be aware that when a root crosses over top of another root, the bottom root will not have toning on both sides of the top root. The toning you are drawing on the back side is the shadow caused by the top root crossing over it. The bottom portion of the root crossing in front of the top root is exposed to the light source so it will not…[Read more]
