Doug, what a wonderful drawing, the fruit, the leaves, the composition. It’s elegant!! And, a fantastic teaching study for all of us students. Thanks for posting it.

Pam, the yellows, those gorgeous petals, the center… a very beautiful complete drawing!

Jill, I love this. I’d love to pick it up. This was my favorite “shell” (not sure how you say it). I lived on Ocracoke Island several summers and picked up so many of these. Your gorgeous drawing takes me right back the those wide, empty of people beaches that had treasures like you draw!

Hey Elizabeth, I love that you are being bold with your colors! However, I think your darkest shadow color is too black. You could use that color for the shadow directly under the apple. I’d use a burgundy or maroon for the darker areas on the apple. And though I love the yellow tone you have in the highlight area, I’d like to see you leave the…[Read more]

Hi again Elizabeth, Nice work. On the two on the left side of the page, I’m seeing a good understanding of the light source. Again, you just need practice on getting more control of your toning. Also when you include the textural details as you have in the twigs, try to make them follow the curve of the object. This will help define the form.

Hi Elizabeth, Good to see you working on those basics! I like that you are getting a good value range from dark to light. Keep working on getting more control of your toning. It just takes practice. Achieving a smooth gradient in those lighter values can be challenging.

Thanks, Doug. I think the centers are made of little flowers, like other composite (?) flowers. It was fun for me to look at them. -

I sort of like “Beach Party” for a name. I also like your composition with the solid fruits on the one side and the more etherial elements floating off to the right.
-
Thanks, Katy. I’ll keep that name. I moved the pieces around and picked this unlikely balance or conversation, as Sam refers to them.
-
I agree with Vern. And it makes me think of a picnic at the beach. I kind of want to see a few ants carrying bits of these things across the page 🙂
-
Vern, nothing was glued for awhile and then I did it, glued them. But I also kind of liked my big, red apple rising to the top of the pile:). I always appreciate your feedback and next time, I’ll warn you before I start gluing!
-
Thanks, Pam. I like that idea. I’ll have to study some ants when I get back. I can add them!!
-
Adore, as usual. 🙂 The top left is asking for something for me – where the apple and flower stem point to – as if God’s hand comes down there (ie Sheila’s hand) like in Michelangelo God reaching to Adam. (I know you well enough now to say whatever comes to mind – 🙂
-
Thanks, Sam! I’ll give it a look and see what falling from the sky:)

Fantastic and fantastical! I’m loving your cutout compositions. There add some whimsy without kitsch. They make me want to look closer at each element.

Gorgeous Pam!!!! The highlights are what grabbed my attention first! Soooo goood!!!!!

Thanks guys! I really want to go back in and add more darks to the right side and the stem, because I want to try to get a little more 3D form, but I ended up with a detached retina. As part of the surgery, they injected a gas bubble that’s meant to continuously hold the detached retina to the back of the eye to get it to reattach. So, I have to h…[Read more]
